Lin, Viv, and Jeff rode to Kurt’s house in ‘Sconset in silence each one thinking about why Kurt had called them to his home. Jeff parked his truck and the three were ushered in before they even pressed the doorbell.

“I’ve been watching for you.” Kurt looked over his shoulder. “My wife is getting the kids ready for bed. I haven’t let on to her that anything is wrong.” He gestured to a room off of the center hallway and everyone filed into his office. The space had two sofas, a television in the corner, and a large glass table with an office chair pulled up to it that Kurt used as his work space. “Let’s sit.” Little kids’ toys were strewn over the rug.

Kurt shifted around on the sofa and ran his hand nervously over his short hair. Lin and Viv sat side by side on the opposite sofa and Jeff took the chair between the couches. They waited and when Kurt didn’t say anymore, Jeff asked, “What’s wrong?”

Kurt swallowed hard, stood up, and took a piece of white paper from his desktop. He walked to Jeff and handed it to him.

Jeff read the words and shifted his gaze to his employer. “Where did you find it?”

Lin could tell by the expression on Jeff’s face and the slight change in his voice that something bad was written on the paper.

“It was tacked to the door of the lighthouse. I found it this morning, but didn’t know what to do with it.” Kurt was still standing up. “At first, I thought it might be kids playing a joke. The incidents at the lighthouse have been reported in the island newspaper. Any joker could type this out and stick it on the door.”

“But…?” Jeff asked.

“But as the day went on, I got more and more nervous about it. I worried something might happen and maybe it could have been avoided if I took the message seriously.”

Lin cleared her throat. “What does it say?”

“Oh, sorry.” Kurt took the paper from Jeff and brought it over to Lin and Viv.
